If you are investing hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars to translate your material, you will undoubtedly want the highest quality available for your investment. But how do you determine if what you’re getting is really quality work?

Here are a few tips to help you out:

  1. The quality of the final document is largely dependent upon the quality of the original source text.
    Just remember this rule of thumb: a poorly written document in the source language will probably appear as poorly written document in the target language.

  2. Take into consideration cultural and country-specific issues early on in your project in order to make the localization/translation process much more effective and efficient.

  3. To maximize linguistic quality always try to include:
    • Style guidelines.
    • A glossary in the source language: a list of words and definitions that explain difficult, technical, product-specific, company-specific or industry-specific terms.
    • A terminology list in the target language.


  4. Selection of linguists: the allure of paying less is hard to ignore, but though you may save initially, you may end up paying more in the long-run and not just financially. Remember: translators are as much professionals as engineers or doctors – they are highly trained and know how to get your message across clearly and correctly so that your end users can easily understand the information.
